They are mixed with a specified quantity of clean water and applied to a prepared substrate using an appropriate notched trowel. A general ceramic tile adhesive may suit stable cementitious walls or floors, but the correct grade depends on tile dimensions, water absorption, location and expected movement. Excess water, poor mixing, expired open time or inadequate adhesive contact can cause debonding.
Tile adhesive is not automatically a waterproofing membrane. Movement joints and substrate cracks require separate detailing under the relevant tiling specification.
